I have 50K plus miles now on my '02 U320. The filter minder says all is well, but I feel guilty not having changed it in 3 years. Is there a time limit on how long one should run a filter before changeing it? I have checked the filter minder and it moves up and down freely with very little suction on the hose. Also where is a good source to purchase the air filter. TIA jim

Are you referring to the fuel filter or the air filter. The air filter has no indicator. The fuel filter does. You can also reset the fuel filter and it then takes time for it to re register its true position. I wouldn't suggest you do that. If its the fuel filter, check your owners manual, it will tell you at how many miles or months you should change regardless of the indicator. The air filter is another story. 50,000 miles is a very long time for the filter to stay clean enough not to affect engine performance. I bought my 1st air filter after 13,000 for about $90 at a NAPA store. I replaced it again after about 11,000 miles. It was filthy because we were driving in the open ranges in Canada. This time I was taken to a Freightliner dealership by the Cummins parts guy and paid about $70 for the filter. An added bonus was that the filter I purchased from Freightliner is the Cummins recommended filter. I believe the filter brand is Fleetwood. The parts guy told me that if you have a problem with your Cummins engine when you are using their recommended filters that they will repair your engine even after the warranty period. I do believe I read that in the Cummins literature also. Anyway, I would recommend you verify this and go to Freightliner to buy the part as you can get it cheaper from them than you can from Cummins.

I'm sorry I didn't make it clear that I was refering to the air cleaner all along. The filter minder is the little plastic bowl with the diaphram that moves up and down according to how much suction is on the clean side of the air filter. Cummins told me the filter should last at least 75K miles under normal driving conditions. Of course that will vary greatly if one is driving in extremely dusty conditions. Thanks for the tip on the place to purchase. Next time I'm around a Cummins dealer I will get their filter. Jim

You want to go to the Freightliner repair facility for the filter. They are the cheapest according to Cummins people. Freightliner sells the Cummins suggested filter which I believe is called Fleetwood. So ask for that brand.

OK Tom Now I got it. Thanks for straightening me out. Sometimes my eyes see more than, or not enough of what is written. Getting old is a pregnant dog! Better than the alternative though huh?

FYI I found the cheapest air cleaner at our local NAPA Dealer. They had a WIX filter in stock for $88.50. Freightliner in El Paso (40 mi away) was a little over $100. I haven't heard anything bad about the WIX filters, but that doesn't mean they are the best. Anyway I am "fixed" for awhile. Thanks for the help. Jim
